The Dead Sea Scrolls were copied from about 250 B.C. to A.D. 68, and are among the earliest extant Biblical manuscripts found.

🏛️ Historical Background

The earliest complete Hebrew manuscripts of the Old Testament are of about the 900–1000 AD. Earlier copies of the books did not survive and scholars knew that the books of the Bible were much older.

Then in 1947, a Bedouin shepherd in search of his lost sheep came upon a cave near the Dead Sea and the ancient settlement of Qumran where he found ancient scrolls. It was a chance discovery which turned into one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.

During the next decade, archaeologists dug in 11 caves and found thousands of fragments of manuscripts containing hundreds of ancient documents.

These manuscripts revolutionized Bible study and ancient Judaism.

Before the discovery, people believed that the Earth was flat.Prior to the discovery the earth was believed to be flat.

Until 1947, some scholars had doubted the accuracy of the Old Testament copies which had been made over several centuries.

The oldest Hebrew manuscripts are one thousand years later than the time of the writing of many biblical books, thus raising questions as to what has been added or subtracted over the years.

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls was a major find of manuscript evidence, and several copies were found that are many centuries older and can be compared to the copies of the manuscripts that had been obtained.

The Discovery reveals that this is an L-1010.This is an L-1010, as revealed by the Discovery.

There are parts of all but one of the Old Testament books in the Dead Sea Scrolls: the Book of Esther.

The following were among the finds:

* Complete scrolls.

* Partial biblical manuscripts.

* Commentaries.

* Community rules.

* Hymns.

* Prayers.

* Legal writings.

The most popular discovery is the Great Isaiah Scroll which is a near-complete copy of the Book of Isaiah from the time of around 125 BC.

It was later compared with other Hebrew manuscripts, which were written about a millennium after, and was surprisingly consistent. There were some differences due to spelling as well as slight variations in copyists, but the message was essentially the same.

This proved the exceptional care that Jewish scribe took to preserve the scriptures.

🚀 Real-World Example

The scrolls are now kept under controlled conditions at the Shrine of the Book, in Jerusalem.

These ancient manuscripts can now be studied by researchers in the world without harming or destroying the originals with high resolution digital photography.

Research into fading text continues to progress with the aid of advanced technologies such as multispectral imaging, infrared photography and artificial intelligence.

Today, the scrolls remain a source of new discoveries into the biblical world, over 2,000 years later.

💡 Easy Explanation

Picture making a handcopy of a book.

Suppose thousands of people made a careful copy of that same book for over a thousand years.

What would the accuracy of the final copy be?

The Dead Sea Scrolls allowed research to be conducted on this subject.

By comparing the manuscripts which were copied at different times, and also centuries apart, the researchers found that the Hebrew Bible had been preserved in very close to its original form.

But that does not imply that every letter was the same, it does indicate that Jewish scribes took great care in transmitting the biblical text.

🤯 Did You Know?

There are 11 caves near Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.

Over 900 manuscripts have been found.

More than a million manuscript fragments are included.

The Great Isaiah Scroll is over 7 metres (24 feet) in length.

Some scrolls are over 2,200 years old*.

The texts are predominantly in the Hebrew language with a few in the Aramaic and Greek languages.

🔍 Scholarly Consensus

The Dead Sea Scrolls are considered by all to be one of the most important discoveries of the twentieth century.

The scrolls offer valuable insights for the study of the history of the Hebrew Bible and the religious environment in which Jesus grew up, and it is without doubt that they are a treasure to the scholars.

The discovery doesn't prove that all the events in the Bible happened exactly as they were written. Rather, it shows that many of the books of the Bible were meticulously copied and preserved well before Jesus' time.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are one of the most significant manuscript discoveries ever made for historians, linguists, archaeologists and biblical scholars.

🙏 Spiritual Reflection

The word of our God shall remain for ever, said Isaiah.

These ancient scrolls survived so well over the centuries of war, weather and man that remind many believers of the preservation of Scripture.

From the standpoint of faith or historical research, the Dead Sea Scrolls remind us to take the time to study God's Word and to value the people who dedicated themselves to keeping these sacred texts.

📌 Key Takeaway

The Dead Sea Scrolls are among the earliest of surviving biblical texts ever found. This extraordinary survival has bolstered scholars' faith in the faithful transmission of the Hebrew Scriptures over a long period of time. The scrolls have boosted our knowledge of the ancient textual history of the Bible without altering our understanding of it.
