Is Jealousy a Sin?

Jealousy is not always a sin, but it can become sinful when it leads to envy, hatred, or a desire to harm others. The Bible warns against destructive jealousy and encourages us to practise love, contentment, and kindness.

What Does the Bible Say?

James 3:16 (KJV) “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” When jealousy leads to conflict, resentment, or harmful actions, it can damage our relationships and spiritual lives. 1 Corinthians 13:4 (KJV) “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not…” Love does not resent another person's blessings or success. Instead, it encourages us to celebrate the good things that happen to others.

Bible Characters Who Faced Similar Situations

Joseph's brothers — Genesis 37:11, 18–28. Their jealousy led them to mistreat Joseph and sell him into slavery.
King Saul — 1 Samuel 18:7–11. His jealousy of David's success turned into anger and attempts to kill him.

How Can Christians Overcome Jealousy?

Recognize your feelings instead of allowing them to control you. Be grateful for what you have, avoid comparing your life with others, and pray for a heart that celebrates other people's blessings.

Final Thoughts

Feeling jealous does not automatically make you a bad person, but allowing jealousy to grow into bitterness or harmful behaviour can become sinful. Ask God for wisdom and learn to respond with love, gratitude, and contentment.
