Bible Verses When You Are Worried About the Future

Worrying about the future can steal your peace today.
You may be thinking about your career, finances, relationships, health, family, or whether your plans will work out. Sometimes the future feels frightening simply because you cannot see what is coming.
The Bible does not promise that we will know everything about tomorrow. Instead, Scripture teaches us to trust God with what we cannot see, seek His wisdom for the decisions in front of us, and take life one day at a time.
Here are Bible verses to read when you are worried about the future.

1. Matthew 6:34

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” — Matthew 6:34 (KJV) Jesus reminds us not to live tomorrow's troubles before tomorrow arrives. You have today to live, pray, work, and make wise decisions. Let tomorrow remain in God's hands.

2. Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” — Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) This promise was originally given to the Israelites during their exile. It reminds us that God's purposes can continue even during seasons when life feels uncertain and unfamiliar.

3. Proverbs 3:5–6

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV) You cannot see every detail of the road ahead. Instead of demanding complete certainty, trust God with the parts of the future you cannot yet understand.

4. Isaiah 41:10

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for I am thy God.” “I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee...” — Isaiah 41:10 (KJV) Fear about the future often comes from feeling alone. God's promise of His presence gives you strength to face an uncertain tomorrow.

5. Philippians 4:6–7

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7 (KJV) Instead of allowing future worries to remain inside your mind, bring them to God in prayer. You may not receive every answer immediately, but prayer can change how you carry the uncertainty.

6. Psalm 37:5

“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” — Psalm 37:5 (KJV) You can make plans while still committing your future to God. Do what you can today and trust Him with what you cannot control.

7. Psalm 55:22

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.” — Psalm 55:22 (KJV) Future worries can become heavy burdens. You do not have to carry every possible outcome in your mind. Give those burdens to God and ask Him for strength for today.

8. Psalm 23:1–4

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me...” — Psalm 23:1, 4 (KJV) David describes God as a shepherd who leads and stays with him even through dark valleys. You may not know what is ahead, but you can know who walks with you.

9. Psalm 46:1–2

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” “Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed...” — Psalm 46:1–2 (KJV) When everything around you feels uncertain, God remains a place of refuge. Your circumstances can change without changing who God is.

10. Isaiah 43:2

“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee...” — Isaiah 43:2 (KJV) God does not promise that you will never face difficult circumstances. He promises His presence as you pass through them.

11. Psalm 121:7–8

“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.” “The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” — Psalm 121:7–8 (KJV) The future may contain things you cannot predict. This psalm expresses confidence in God's continuing care over the journey ahead.

12. James 1:5

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally...” — James 1:5 (KJV) Sometimes future anxiety comes from not knowing what decision to make. Instead of trying to predict everything, ask God for wisdom about the decision in front of you.

13. Proverbs 16:9

“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (KJV) It is good to make plans. But plans may change. Leave room for God to redirect your path when circumstances unfold differently than you expected.

14. Psalm 32:8

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” — Psalm 32:8 (KJV) You do not need to know every step of the journey at once. Ask God for guidance as you move forward.

15. Romans 8:28

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God...” — Romans 8:28 (KJV) You cannot predict how every event will turn out. But this verse reminds believers that God can work through circumstances—even difficult ones—for His purposes.

16. Psalm 34:4

“I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4 (KJV) Fear can multiply when you keep thinking about possible future problems. David turned to God with his fears. You can do the same.

17. Lamentations 3:22–23

“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” “They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV) You do not have to solve your entire future today. Tomorrow will bring a new day and another opportunity to experience God's faithfulness.

18. Deuteronomy 31:8

“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee...” — Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV) Moses spoke these words to Joshua as he prepared to lead Israel. The message is powerful for anyone facing an unfamiliar season: God goes before His people and remains with them.

19. Philippians 1:6

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6 (KJV) Your growth is not finished. God continues working in the lives of His people even when they cannot see what He is doing.

20. Hebrews 13:5

“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” — Hebrews 13:5 (KJV) The future may change many things. But God's presence does not depend on your circumstances. You can move forward knowing that you do not face tomorrow alone.

What the Bible Teaches About the Future

The Bible encourages us to: Trust God when we cannot see what is ahead. Focus on today's responsibilities. Pray about future concerns. Ask God for wisdom. Make plans without assuming we control everything. Remain flexible when circumstances change. Remember God's past faithfulness. Avoid living in constant fear of tomorrow. Take practical steps toward our goals. Trust God with outcomes we cannot control. When You Are Afraid of What Might Happen Sometimes the future has not actually brought a problem yet. Your mind is simply imagining everything that could go wrong. You may be thinking: “What if I lose my job?” “What if my plans fail?” “What if I don't have enough money?” “What if something happens to my family?” These questions can keep you trapped in a future that has not happened. Jesus said: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow...” — Matthew 6:34 (KJV) Prepare responsibly for the future, but don't allow imagined possibilities to steal today's peace.

When You Don't Know What Decision to Make

Uncertainty can become especially stressful when an important decision is in front of you. You may be choosing between jobs, careers, relationships, locations, investments, or other major life directions. You don't need perfect certainty before taking every step. Pray. Gather information. Seek wise counsel. Consider the consequences. Then make the best decision you can with the wisdom available to you. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God...” — James 1:5 (KJV)

When Your Plans Have Changed

Sometimes the future worries us because it no longer looks like the future we imagined. A relationship ends. A job disappears. A business fails. An opportunity closes. A dream gets delayed. You may wonder what happened to the life you planned. “A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (KJV) A changed plan does not mean that your life has lost its purpose. You can grieve what changed while remaining open to where God leads next. When You Are Worried About Your Career Career uncertainty can be especially difficult because work affects finances, identity, and future plans. Do what you can today. Improve your skills. Build experience. Apply for opportunities. Seek wise advice. And commit your work to God. “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” — Proverbs 16:3 (KJV) You don't have to know exactly where your career will be five years from now to take the right step today. When You Are Worried About Money Financial uncertainty can make the future seem frightening. You may not know how you will meet future expenses or whether your income will be enough. Jesus reminds us: “For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.” — Matthew 6:32 (KJV) Plan wisely, work faithfully, manage your resources carefully, and bring your financial concerns to God.

When You Are Waiting for Something to Change

Waiting can make you question whether anything is happening. You may be waiting for a job, an answer to prayer, a relationship, a financial opportunity, or a new season. Don't assume that waiting means nothing is happening. “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength...” — Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) Use the waiting season wisely while trusting God with the timing. When You Feel You Must Control Everything Future anxiety often comes from trying to control things that are outside our control. You can control your preparation. You can control your choices. You can control your effort. But you cannot control every person, event, opportunity, or outcome. “The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.” — Proverbs 16:33 (KJV) Do what belongs to you. Leave what belongs to God in His hands. When You Are Afraid You Will Fail Fear of future failure can stop you from taking necessary steps today. You may avoid an opportunity because you are afraid it won't work. Remember: “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.” — Proverbs 24:16 (KJV) Failure is not something you have to invite, but neither is it something you need to be paralyzed by. You can learn, adjust, and begin again.

When You Can't See God's Plan

One of the hardest parts of faith is trusting when you cannot see the entire picture. You may want God to show you exactly what will happen next. But sometimes He gives enough light for the next step rather than the entire journey. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 (KJV) You don't need to understand everything before you trust Him.

A Prayer When You Are Worried About the Future

Heavenly Father, You know the future, and I do not. You know everything I am worried about before I even speak it. I am afraid of what might happen, and sometimes my thoughts run far ahead of today. Help me bring those worries to You. Give me wisdom for the decisions I need to make. Give me courage for the things I cannot avoid. Give me patience when I have to wait. Help me prepare responsibly without becoming controlled by fear. When my plans change, help me trust You. When I cannot see the way forward, guide my next step. When I am worried about my career, finances, family, and future, remind me that You are already there. Help me live faithfully today instead of constantly worrying about tomorrow. I surrender the future into Your hands. Give me Your peace and help me trust Your direction one step at a time. In Jesus' name, Amen.

One Verse to Carry With You

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD...” — Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) You do not have to know everything about tomorrow. Trust God with the future, seek His wisdom for today, and take the next step with faith.
